In the past few decades, there has been a consistent stream of new experiments focusing on ultracold atomic gases. These experiments often revolve around systems containing just a few atoms confined in nearly one-dimensional traps and shed light on their counterintuitive quantum nature. One notable example is the experiment [Kao et al., Science 371, 2021], where researchers utilized the so-called topological pumping to generate excited states of a gas consisting of dysprosium atoms. The states they obtained exhibited a range of unexpected properties, challenging conventional assumptions about non-interacting bosonic systems. In my talk, I intend to explore these fascinating characteristics in detail.
